Our organizing and leadership development efforts aim at providing residents and members with skills to impact what goes on in their homes, at their sites, and in their communities.

One way to become involved is by joining one of Bickerdike’s volunteer committees such as the Residents Council, the Public Safety Committee, or the Garden Committee. Committee work ranges from community beautification projects, to planning for new affordable housing developments, to advocacy for housing policy reform. Some committees, such as the Tenant Selection Committee take an active part in the management of our housing. Some members have gone on to serve on Bickerdike’s Board of Directors.

Another way to increase your impact is to attend community meetings and events such as bimonthly C.A.P.S. meetings with leaders from your local police precinct. You could also speak at a public meeting regarding development in your community, sign up to meet with your local Alderman on Ward Night, or provide testimony at a public hearing or before a mayoral task force.

By volunteering on committees and participating in organizing or advocacy campaigns, residents and members work together to address their own interests, and can go on to get involved in organizing efforts around issues affecting the whole community. Bickerdike’s Tenant and Community Organizers can assist you in developing a strategy to make your voice heard and turn your vision for your community into a reality.
