As part of Bickerdike’s community revitalization and economic development efforts, we’ve developed and manage over 90,000 square feet of commercial space. Our commercial spaces offer important goods and services to the community, provide employment for over 100 area residents and add vitality to our local commercial districts.
Cermak Produce at El Mercado
Bickerdike acquired and rehabbed the shopping center at 2701 W. North Avenue in the early 1990s after two grocery chains failed at the site. Since 1998, Cermak Produce has been the anchor tenant at El Mercado, providing fresh affordable food and employing local area residents. In 2013, Cermak Produce completed a storewide renovation and expanded product lines while maintaining low prices.
La Estancia Commercial Space
In 2007, Bickerdike completed the construction of La Estancia, a mixed used project consisting of 57 affordable apartments and 14,000 square feet of commercial space in 3 buildings on Division Street.
The commercial tenants include a daycare center, an alternative high school, a diabetes empowerment program and Bickerdike’s maintenance offices. The commercial space has brought new vibrancy to Division Street where vacant lots once stood.
Zapata Apartments Commercial Space
Our Zapata Apartments development, which brought 4 new buildings and 61 affordable units to formerly vacant lots in Logan Square, includes 4,000 square feet of commercial space. Center for Changing Lives occupied the space as of January 2015.
Bickerdike’s main corporate and property management offices are housed at our 2550 W. North Avenue building. We are currently planning a renovation of the 24,000 square foot building that we have owned since the mid-1980s.
